Clinical Supervision

Do you face challenging situations that are hard to navigate or just looking for ways to further deepen your practice?

I am passionate about walking alongside fellow social workers, nurturing their competence and growth. I bring 20 years of experience, including work with street entrenched populations and youth in Slovakia, families and newcomers in inner-city Dublin, and individuals facing multiple barriers at RISE Community Health Centre in Vancouver. In my own work with clients I use trauma-informed, strength based, anti-oppressive approaches that are shaped by humanistic perspective, feminist theories and mindfulness practice. I support clients in following areas: mental health including anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation, intimate parter violence, substance use and life transitions. I engage with the following populations: newcomers, families, youth, LGBTQ2S+, seniors and street entrenched folks.

Having benefited from clinical supervision early in my career, I understand its value as a safe space for professional debriefing and growth. I’ve supervised MSW students since 2009 in Ireland and continued at RISE CHC, supervising both MSW and BSW practicum students since 2020.

I provide clinical supervision to social workers registered in British Columbia. I’m currently unable to supervise practitioners from other disciplines. My theoretical framework is grounded in Carl Rogers’s humanistic practice. My aim is to provide full and open presence during supervision. My preferred supervision model is the Seven-Eyed Model of Supervision (Hawkins & McMahon, 2020). This model both relational and systemic, as it explores the different levels of relationships in supervision (between the supervisee and client or supervisor and supervisee) and how these interact with the wider context.

What To Expect

  • A collaborative discussion about supervisee’s goals for supervision
  • Exploration of interpersonal and intrapsychic issues impacting clinical work
  • Relationship that is based on mutual respect, trust, honesty, transparency, openness and empathy

Limitations: I do not provide individual therapy, emergency/crisis services, or private practice coaching.

Endorsements

It has been a privilege to support social workers in their professional journeys. These reflections offer a glimpse into what supervision with me is like.

“Johanka created a space where I felt truly seen, heard, and supported in a way that fostered my professional growth and personal confidence. She encouraged my ideas, offered insightful guidance, and helped me sharpen my skills in alignment with my values and clinical interests. I would highly recommend her as a clinical supervisor to anyone seeking grounded, values-driven support in their professional/clinical journey.”

— Jennifer Tolentino, MSW, RSW

“Johanka provided kind and meaningful feedback to me during my MSW practicum placement. She approached her supervision with humour and curiosity, which I really appreciated. I always felt confident and comfortable to bring difficult and challenging situations to her. I would definitely recommend Johanka as a supervisor.”

— Monica Vuong, MSW, RSW

I am an uninvited guest on the unceded ancestral territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm, the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and the Səl̓ílwətaɬ Peoples. As a social worker, I am committed to understanding the lasting impacts of colonization and am working to decolonize myself and my practice.
